The car was driving on the wrong side of the road when it clipped a silver Toyota Corolla before colliding head-on with a Mercedes SUV.

The 43-year-old male driver of the Mercedes and his passengers – a 67-year-old woman, 42-year-old woman, nine-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy – miraculously walked away from the crash.

They were all taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with minor injuries.

The Corolla driver, a 26-year-old woman, and two other drivers of vehicles caught up in the crash, another 26-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man, were not injured.

Kings St business owner Mohamed Zahour said the crash sounded like a bomb going off.

“When we came out we found like four to five cars had crashed,” he told 7NEWS.

“(The driver) thought he was on a highway.”

The MG driver, a 28-year-old man, was treated by paramedics before he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was later charged with drive in a manner dangerous and had his licence suspended.

The man was issued a court attendance notice to appear at Newtown Local Court in August.

His passenger, a 20-year-old man, was arrested at the scene after he allegedly attempted to interfere in the police investigation and assaulted a female police officer and paramedics.

The man was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he allegedly assaulted a male police officer and security staff while under police guard.

On Monday, he was released from the hospital and taken to a police station where he was charged with three offences relating to the assaults and investigation interference.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday.
