A Sydney Airport worker has been jailed for more than two years for helping a criminal organisation import 127kg of a key ingredient used to make meth into Australia.

The 56-year-old man was sentenced in the NSW District Court on Tuesday to two years and four months behind bars, with a non-parole period of 18 months.

He was arrested in June 2021 after an AFP investigation linked him to a criminal organisation behind the importation of 127kg of pseudoephedrine — a precursor used to make methamphetamine.

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers intercepted a consignment from India in Sydney in October 2020 that was declared as containing denim material.

Inside were 26 boxes containing rolls of fabric, where officers discovered clear packets filled with a white powder-like substance.

Forensic testing later confirmed the substance was 127kg of pure pseudoephedrine.

Investigators alleged the man used his position as a Sydney Airport worker to alert the criminal organisation behind the importation to law enforcement interest.

The information was uncovered through AN0M, an encrypted communications platform used by organised crime gangs.

The man pleaded guilty on June 18 this year to supporting a criminal organisation and was sentenced on Tuesday.

AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Luke Wilson warned law enforcement would continue targeting people involved at every level of the drug trade.

“Criminals should be on notice - no matter what role a person plays in supporting organised crime, they will be identified, prosecuted and brought before the courts,” Wilson said. 

ABF Superintendent Asha Patwardhan said criminal syndicates would use any means available to import illicit drugs into Australia, including exploiting people in positions of trust who had legitimate access to secure areas of the border.
