An elderly supermarket worker has allegedly been bashed by a stranger in Sydney’s innerwest.

Yacob Namrood, 74, was on shift collecting trolleys in Balmain when he was followed into an underground carpark and set upon, it is alleged.

Workers on busy Darling St about 10am on Wednesday rushed towards the shouting.

They said they could not drag the alleged attacker off, and retreated before locking both men inside.

“There was some guy in there going crazy,” one witness told 7NEWS.

“Four people were in there trying to stop the guy while I was on the phone to the cops.”

Onlookers said workers distracted the man until police arrived.

Namrood has injuries to his face, nose, and eyes and was taken by ambulance to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

“He wasn’t in amazing shape when he came out. We’re just hoping he’s OK,” one witness told 7NEWS.

Brett Micallef, 49, was arrested by detectives and charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and common assault.
