Liverpool champion Diogo Jota has died just days after his wedding capped off the biggest weeks of his career.
The 28-year-old and his brother Andre Silva, a 26-year-old footballer in their native Portugal, were killed in a car crash near Zamora in the north-west of Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Authorities said their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blow-out while overtaking another then left the road, crashed and caught fire, with the two siblings found dead after emergency services arrived.

Jota had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22.
“Yes to forever,” they wrote on social media.
The couple share three children together.
The ceremony took place just weeks after a busy but successful period on the pitch for Jota.
He won the English Premier League with Liverpool in May, having scored six goals in 26 games on their way to the title.
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” the club said.
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”
Jota started on the bench for Portugal in the Nations League final against Spain last month before being thrown into the action in extra time.
Portugal won 5-3 on penalties after the match finished 2-2.
Jota was also an unused substitute when Portugal won the 2019 Nations League final.
“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva this morning in Spain,” Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca said.
“Much more than a fantastic player, with almost 50 caps for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.
“On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Jota, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players played, respectively.”
Proenca said Portuguese officials asked for a minute’s silence to be held before Portugal’s Women’s Euros clash with Spain on Thursday (Friday AEST), with the request granted by UEFA.
“We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and Andre Jota represents an irreparable loss for Portuguese football and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day,” he added.

Jota began his professional career with Pacos de Ferreira in Portugal and was snapped up by Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in 2016.
But he was immediately loaned back to Porto in his home country, spending one season with the title contenders.
Andre Silva was on Porto’s books as a youth prospect at the time.
Jota left for England in 2017 with a loan move to English Championship club Wolverhampton, helping the second-division outfit earn promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 2012.
A permanent move followed and he helped Wolves immediately establish themselves in the EPL.
“We are heartbroken,” Wolverhampton said following Jota’s death.
“Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten.
“Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother Andre.
“You will be truly missed, and always remembered.”
Jota joined Liverpool in 2018 and was a crucial cog as the Reds came close to a cup treble in 2021-22.
Liverpool won the FA Cup and League Cup — Jota scoring in the two shootout victories against Chelsea after 0-0 draws — but they fell short in the Champions League final against Real Madrid.
