Smart is waiting until the Paris motor show in October to drop its new #2 on the world, but certification filings made by the automaker to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology have revealed its design and key details.

According to CnEVPost and Car News China, the filings show the #2 will measure just 2751mm or 2764mm long, likely depending on the sportiness of the bumpers attached to the variants, each of which are 1669mm wide, 1555mm tall, and ride on a 1875mm wheelbase.

That means the #2 is around 60mm longer than the third-generation ForTwo, but virtually the same in all other dimensions. The third-gen ForTwo, which ceased production in 2024, was 2695mm long, 1663mm wide, 1555mm tall, and had a 1873mm wheelbase.

The #2 will be powered by a 60kW motor that's hooked up to a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL. Although the filing doesn't specify battery capacity, earlier reports indicated it would be a 35.7kWh unit good for a WLTP range of around 300km.

A kerb weight of 1130kg is listed in the filing, and the #2 is said to have a top speed of 140km/h. If true, the #2 will be 40kg lighter than the electric ForTwo EQ despite having just a bit more than double the battery capacity. The ForTwo EQ had a tiny 17.6kWh battery, and a 135km WLTP range rating.

Buyers can choose from 15-inch wheels fitted with either 165/65 or 185/60 tyres, or 16-inch rims with 185/50 or 205/45 rubber.

Stylistically, the #2 stays true to the ForTwo before it, as well as the Concept #2 unveiled in April this year. One thing seemingly missing from the new car is the ForTwo's steel Tridion safety cell, which was typically highlighted by an arc of contrasting colour.

The new car can be specified with a black, champagne or colour-coded roof. Among the other options to be available are numerous wheel designs, mirror caps, and fluted champagne-colour extensions for the sills, front spoiler, and rear skirt.

Owners can even opt for a grille insert that mimics the Louis Vuitton bag design seen on the concept, complete with fake leather straps.

We'll find out more about the car when it debuts at the Paris motor show in October.

When it goes on sale, the #2 will be the smallest car developed by the brand since Geely took a 50 per cent stake in 2020. While Smart originally made its name with tiny city cars, all of the models launched since the brand’s rebirth under Geely/Mercedes-Benz stewardship have been 4.2m long or longer. Indeed, the #6 sedan is around the size of the Toyota Camry.

As with other Smart cars since that time, the Chinese firm is in charge of engineering, while Mercedes-Benz is responsible for design. The #2 rides on the new Electric Compact Architecture, which has been specifically developed for tiny city cars.

With Smart's original factory in Hambach, France now owned by Ineos, the #2 will be built in China and exported around the world. Europe will, obviously, be a key market, but there seems to be a good chance it will be sold in Australia too, given the #2's street art teaser campaign included a mural in the Melbourne CBD.

Although the car has yet to be confirmed for Australia, a Smart Australia spokesperson noted "further information regarding Smart #2 market availability will be shared at the appropriate time".
