Deine Mariner’s Rugby League World Cup is under threat after lasting just 10 minutes in Samoa’s record-setting 78-4 win over France in Sydney on Friday.
The 23-year-old Broncos star scored his nation’s first try but suffered a hamstring injury soon after, as concussion carnage also struck the French side.

Five-eighth Cesar Rouge was forced off after just four and a half minutes with Darrelatour also needing a head injury assessment after seven minutes. Rouge passed his HIA.
Moments later Mariner pulled up after a run inside France’s half and headed straight off the field.
“He may have had maybe a left hammy twinge,” Luke Keary said on Channel 7.
“You can see it there, the emotion on Deine Mariner — he knows. You can see the emotion, what it means in his first World Cup.
“He scored a try in the opening stages. It looks as though he knows that this hamstring may not be a good one.”

Mariner was later spotted with ice wrapped around his hamstring.
“It was just some tightness,” Samoa coach Ben Gardiner told Channel 7 at half-time.
“Given the way the game was going and we had Sua Fa’alogo on the bench, and we thought we’d bring him on at some stage, he just got on a bit earlier, which is good.
“Just a safety thing (for Mariner).”
Mariner’s absence wasn’t felt by his side, with replacement Fa’alogo scoring down the left as Samoa raced out to a 22-0 lead inside 15 minutes.
Fa’alogo then put on the final pass for Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to score his first try in the 18th minute for a 28-0 lead.
Keary described it as a Samoan “avalanche” before France got on the board when Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet went over in the corner later in the first half.
The French side put more pressure on as Samoa turned sloppy, but Fa’alogo — having already shed his helmet — scored his second just before the break.
Jarome Luai evaded the on-rushing Mathieu Jussaume, defending in the centres in place of Darrelatour, and immediately threw a pass over the top to Fa’alogo.
“Jussaume just not trusting the process, needs to come up to the play if he’s going to come inside out like he has against the class of Jarome Luai,” Corey Parker said on Channel 7.
Samoa took a 34-4 lead into half-time and refused to slow down.
Fa’alogo finished with four tries and two try assists while seven teammates had one try apiece.
Benaiah Ioelu rubbed salt in the wounds of France with his second try in the 80th minute after Stephen Crichton’s penalty goal attempt hit the upright and bounced perfectly for the hooker to pounce.
The try made for a record score and margin at a Rugby League World Cup for Samoa.
“That was awesome,” co-captain Junior Paulo told Channel 7.
“The way (the fans) turn up, it means everything to us. This was the reason why we play for our nation, to turn up here and see the crowd — it means the world to us. When we’ve got to dig deep out there, they’re the reason.”
Samoa will next face Papua New Guinea before finishing the group stage against Tonga.
France must lick their wounds ahead of next week’s clash with England, while they will wrap up their tournament against Lebanon.
“Really tough game, really tough,” captain Ben Garcia said.
“But we are proud to pull the French jersey on, that’s the reality of the situation for our sport in France. But we are passionate about rugby league and we keep going.”
