A mobility scooter rider has died in a hit-and-run crash that shut down a busy street in Melbourne’s inner west.

The scooter and a car collided near the intersection of Francis and Ballarat Sts in Yarraville about 11.35am on Wednesday.

The scooter rider died before he could be taken to hospital. He has not yet been formally identified.

The car driver left the scene and is yet to be located.

Francis St had been closed between Hyde St and Williamstown Rd as police investigate the collision.

Access remains available for local residents and businesses on either side of the closure.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam footage or other relevant information, to contact them.
