A 34-year-old man has been charged with the shooting murder of a Gold Coast man as new details emerge about the victim’s miraculous tale of survival from a point-blank shotgun attack seven years ago.

Matthew Walker faced Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday after his arrest on Wednesday night over the death of 35-year-old Matthew Pascoe.

Pascoe was found unresponsive on the floor of a room at the Hinterland Hotel on Station Street in Nerang about 11.15am on Saturday by a hotel cleaner.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Seven years ago, Pascoe survived being shot at point-blank range with a sawn-off shotgun in an unrelated incident in a Nerang park.

The brutal attack in 2018 followed a verbal dispute with his former friend Tyson James Scott Boulden, who later pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and possession of a shortened firearm. He was jailed for three years.

Police said there is no suggestion Boulden was involved in Pascoe’s death on Saturday.

A post-mortem examination into Pascoe’s death revealed the 35-year-old died from significant head and internal injuries, prompting Queensland Police to launch a murder investigation.

Pascoe had been staying at the hotel due to a court order banning him from drinking alcohol at home, police confirmed.

The victim’s sister Caitlyn has paid tribute to her brother in an online fundraiser, describing him as “a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew him.”

“Matthew was more than just a brother — his kind heart, sense of humour, and unwavering love for his family and friends touched so many,” she wrote.

“Losing him has left an immeasurable void in our lives.”

She said her brother was beloved by his nieces and nephews who “thought the absolute world of him” and knew him as “uncle Matty”.

Detectives confirmed Pascoe checked into the hotel with his mother about 2pm on Friday, but she left shortly after and didn’t return.

CCTV captured him visiting reception about 6.20pm.

Authorities said there were no obvious signs of a struggle in the room and no evidence of a confrontation with anyone at the hotel.

Walker, also from Nerang, was remanded into custody and will return to court next month.

Police are urging anyone who stayed at or visited the Hinterland Hotel on Station Street from Friday evening, May 23, to Saturday, May 24, to contact them immediately as investigations continue.
