Luckless Essendon defender Zach Reid looks to have suffered yet another injury scare just as he was on the verge of a return.

The Bombers are fearful that Reid has reinjured the hamstring that has kept him sidelined since Round 12 and have sent him for scans.

“More soft tissue concerns at Essendon with fears of another hamstring injury for Zach Reid out of training this morning,” 7NEWS Melbourne’s Mitch Cleary said on Wednesday.

The prized top-10 draft pick from 2020 managed just nine games across his first four seasons at AFL level, but had looked to have turned a corner this year, emerging as one of the competition’s best young key defenders and playing every game throughout the first three months of the season.

Just hours earlier, Bombers coach Brad Scott said Reid and fellow injured star defender Jordan Ridley had been “medically cleared’ to play.

“They’re medically available,” Scott said before Wednesday’s session.

“The bye came at a good time in a sense. We would’ve had a difficult decision to make last week with a number of players as to whether they were ready to play. That becomes a little bit easier with the extra week.

“They’re both medically cleared, but we’ve got to make a decision on risk mitigation. You can only take the advice you get. They’ve done everything they’ve needed to and more.

“We’ll make a decision post-training.”

It continues a wretched run for the Bombers, who were dealt more bad luck during a training session last Saturday when their already decimated player availability was made even worse.

During a light session in the build-up to the clash with Gold Coast this Saturday at Marvel Stadium, three players pulled up sore.

“Injury mayhem at Essendon training this morning,” Cleary said at the time.

“Fears over a calf injury to Darcy Parish. Mason Redman (hamstring) and Kyle Langford (quad) both reported discomfort following the session.

“All will be assessed further in coming days.”

Later on Saturday the club issued a statement.

“Langford and Redman have had a normal training week building up to a return to play but suffered setback with both reporting discomfort in quad (Langford) and hammy (Redman),” Essendon said.

“Parish felt a calf tightness towards end of training and has gone for precautionary scans.

“Will know more in the coming days on all players.”

Cleary later reported that Langford’s season could be in doubt with his latest setback.

Parish has endured a wretched run with injuries in recent seasons, hampered by ongoing back and calf issues.

He has only managed three games this year and had only just made his way back into the team.

The latest issues are a big headache for Scott, who is already dealing with a significant injury list and has been hoping to get some cattle back on the park.

Other injured stars include Sam Draper (season), Harrison Jones (ankle), Ben McKay (foot) and Nick Bryan (season), plus Reid and Ridley.

There also fears for the career of utility Nik Cox (concussion) who is waiting on the findings of the AFL’s concussion panel to see if he can continue playing.
