Online whistle-blowers have shared damming footage that appears to show a player click his fingers as the ball goes past the bat to mimic the sound of an edge on multiple separate occasions.

Each time, the keeper takes the catch behind the stumps and the fielding side appeals to the umpire, who gives it out.

In one video, a fuming batter protests with the umpire and points towards the fielder at first slip who is accused of clicking his fingers.

The video quality and the angle at which it has been taken from means it can’t be proved beyond doubt that the batter has missed the ball, but still images from the footage do appear to show a gap between bat and ball as a shot is being played.

Saltburn’s wicket keeper has taken an astonishing 31 catches from his past eight matches, including eight in one innings — one more than the Test record of seven.

Since the vision emerged on social media, official streams of some Saltburn matches appear to have been removed from their website.

In a statement on Tuesday (AEST), North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League said: “The League have received a formal complaint regarding alleged incidents in a Division Two game on Saturday.

“A full investigation has been initiated and until such time as the formal processes are complete no further comment will be made.”

Ben Mummery, a local cricketer from Durham in England, was first to accuse the club of “cheating”.

“Saltburn first slip clicks his fingers to imitate an edge, bat nowhere near it and given out,” he wrote alongside vision of one such incident.

“This is about the worst case of cheating I’ve ever seen in cricket. Apparently, their keeper has a huge amount of catches this season.”

Middlesbrough captain Rory Cotterill, whose team sits ninth on the ladder, shared another video of the same club with a similar claim.

“Boro 2s skippa here, was 2 more incidents during this game, leading to a 15 and 16 year old being cheated out of an innings, along with this one,” he wrote alongside the video.

“I was at the non strikers end at the time unknowingly watching them cheat in real time. We lost this game by 29 runs. Shocking.”

British cricket writer Amer Malik said it “Looks as if Saltburn CC are in for a rude awakening”.

“Having allegedly cheated their way through each weekend, the only viable option is to relegate them to the lowest division and impose extended bans on every 1st and 2nd-team player who represented the club during the period in question,” he added.
