Experienced umpire Brett Rosebury was on the spot and immediately took action.

He paid a free kick against Rowell and quickly had him in the book for striking.

Looking at the vision, commentator Kelli Underwood called it “a quick, blazing jab”

“It was too high,” Underwood said.

Former Brisbane champion Jonathan Brown said Rowell needed to compose himself after the incident.

”Speaking from experience, Matty Rowell’s just got to reset. (He’s gotta think), ‘OK, I can’t worry about this until Monday or Tuesday’,” Brown said.

Alastair Lynch, another Lions great, said he didn’t think Rowell would be suspended

“Actually, I don’t think it he has too much to worry about there. It was a free kick, that’s it,” Lynch said.

Dwayne Russell suggested it might be wise to show Rowell the vision of the incident at half-time so he wouldn’t stress over it throughout the rest of the game.

Lynch said: “Great point. If you assess it, and you think, ‘Well, you’ve got no dramas,’ absolutely, show him.”

Rowell’s report compounded a dirty day for the Suns, who fell to an 11-point defeat.

The 23-year-old was among his side’s best with 27 touches and a staggering 13 tackles in the wet conditions.

It continued his outstanding season, but a suspension would obviously rule him out of Brownlow Medal contention.

Just six points separated the two sides at half-time, setting the scene for a thrilling finish.

The Suns briefly hit the front but goals to Shai Bolton and Pat Voss gave the Dockers a handy 13-point buffer at the final change.

Fremantle kicked the all-important first goal of the final term, but Sam Flanders ensured a grandstand finish with two goals in the space of three minutes.

The Suns closed to within five points, however the Dockers sealed it on the back of a Jye Amiss goal in the final minute.

Bolton kicked three goals to get one over former mentor Damien Hardwick, inspiring his side to victory.

Highlighted as Fremantle’s “barometer” by ex-Richmond boss Hardwick in the build-up to the game, Bolton shone in the front half with 20 disposals.

But his late tackle on Nick Holman was every bit as important, directly leading to Jye Amiss’s match-sealing goal in the final 30 seconds.

The Dockers had led by a game-high 20 points in the final quarter, but saw the lead trimmed to five as Gold Coast gave them a huge scare.

A third straight victory put the Dockers (7-5) into the top eight, while the Suns (8-3) suffered just their third loss of the season and first on home turf.

Caleb Serong (27 disposals, six clearances) and stand-in captain Andrew Brayshaw (30, five) were important for Fremantle, and Patrick Voss stood tall in attack with a career-best three goals and eight tackles.

Luke Jackson (27 disposals, 20 hit-outs) was influential as a ruckman, and Jordan Clark (30 touches) was composed in defence.

Gold Coast captain Noah Anderson was immense with game-high tallies of 39 disposals and 12 clearances.
