An interview with an internet-famous adventurer has taken a dramatic turn when a cyclist allegedly confronted a group of young riders who had gathered around and threatened to hit one of them.

The confrontation happened as 7NEWS social media reporter Jada Adams Irving and a cameraman were filming an interview with Japanese traveller Catman Ken, whose real name is Kentaro Jin, at Maroochydore, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, on July 1.

Jin has now posted dramatic footage of the incident to his socials, apologising for his part in blocking the cycleway and for “not stepping in sooner to protect the children”.

The video has drawn a flood of comments, with most people backing Jin and criticising the cyclist for his outburst.

The video shows the cyclist returning several times and apparently threatening and swearing at the young riders, some of whom were on e-bikes.

As Catman Ken, Jin has built a following among young Australians while cycling around the country in his distinctive leopard-print onesie, towing a heavy cart, as part of his fundraising journey for children with cancer.

Adams Irving met Jin at about 1.30pm outside the Maroochy Bridge Hotel where a large group of children soon gathered around him, blocking part of the footpath.

Within a minute of the crew arriving, a cyclist rode past the group and began swearing at them.

“We were already trying to set up off the footpath and move somewhere else to set up when the man cycled past and swore at all of us,” Adams Irving said.

She said the situation escalated when the cyclist then rode his bike directly into the group of children.

For about five minutes, the cyclist repeatedly appeared to be about to leave only to turn around again, continuing to approach the group and yell and make threats, Adams Irving said.

The woman who was with him was “screaming at him to stop” for much of the confrontation.

A video of the incident, posted by Jin on Instagram, captures the cyclist repeatedly abusing the group and demanding they clear the footpath.

At one point, the man is heard saying: “I am going to f****** knuckle one of these kids.”

Another exchange captures Jin and others repeatedly apologising and trying to move the children away.

The cyclist then appears to continue the confrontation despite attempts to calm him down.

Adams Irving said the contrast between the cyclist’s behaviour and the reaction of those around him was striking.

“The whole situation just escalated a lot considering how calm and apologetic everyone else around him was,” she said.

The 7NEWS cameraman eventually stepped in and managed to move the cyclist along.

Jin has said he accepts responsibility for part of what happened.

“I’m truly sorry for blocking the road, and for not stepping in sooner to protect the children,” he wrote.

“I deeply regret how I handled this situation.”

The post has attracted millions of views and a flood of comments, among them: “Never thought I’d say this, but I’m on the e-bike kids’ side.”

Another described the incident as an adult “threatening children”, while another praised the children for remaining calm during the confrontation.

A number of commenters also questioned whether the incident should be reported to police.

The footage has also prompted criticism from some cycling enthusiasts, with one commenter identifying themselves as a fellow cyclist and saying they were “appalled” by the man’s behaviour.

Jin has not identified the cyclist publicly.
