Passengers are stranded and dozens of flights are cancelled as severe weather continues to tear across the NSW coastline.

Flight in and out of Sydney Airport have been disrupted, with the airport warning passengers to check with their airlines regarding the status of flights.

One frustrated tourist told 7NEWS they were not notified their flight had been cancelled before arriving at Brisbane Airport, adding they had missed their connecting flight from Sydney to the US.

“Our flight unfortunately got cancelled in the middle of the night and so we got here and found out we do not have a flight to get on,” they said.

“We did not get a text or an email, (except) one email yesterday about 12.30pm saying the weather in Sydney was going to be bad and to keep checking our flight status.”

Another passenger said they had travelled in the early hours of the morning to the airport, unaware their flight had also been cancelled.

“We didn’t get any communication prior to arriving at the airport about 3.45am,” they said.

“We tried to check in and we couldn’t. So that’s how we found out it was cancelled.

“They rebooked our flights for the same itinerary for tomorrow, so I guess we’ll just hang out and explore Brisbane for another day.”

Australian journalist and former television presenter Brooke Boney posted a video to social media of passengers aboard a plane applauding after a “terrifying” landing experience at Sydney Airport.

“OK I normally think it’s a bit naff when people applaud the plane landing but that was a truly terrifying experience,” she said.

“(The pilot) abandoned one attempt but landed the second.”

A go-around or missed approach happens when a pilot aborts the landing due to unsuitable conditions, such as severe wind.

Virgin Australia said more than 20 scheduled flights had been cancelled on Tuesday, and it expected more impacts on Wednesday.

“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority and our meteorologists continue to monitor the weather system in Sydney closely,” Virgin Australia said.

“We regret the impact of this on guests’ travel plans and are working hard to re-accommodate impacted guests and ensure they reach their destination as soon as possible.”

Sydney Airport currently only has one runway open and that is expected to remain the situation throughout Wednesday.

Passengers whose flights have been affected can check the Virgin Australia’s Guest Compensation Policy which sets out what customers are entitled to when their flights are disrupted, including other flight options, a travel credit, or a refund for the value of the booking.

Qantas has also experienced significant disruptions but has not publicly detailed the exact number of cancelled flights.

Jetstar has not responded to requests for information on the number of flight cancellations but it is understood impacts continue on Wednesday.

Forecasters had warned of destructive wind gusts with possible peak gusts greater than 125km/h from the Mid-North Coast to the Illawarra, including Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.

Six-hourly isolated rainfall totals of up to 120mm were also possible, BOM said, with flood watches in place for multiple catchments.
