A serious multi-vehicle crash has shut down a major arterial road in Melbourne’s north.

The collision, involving at least four vehicles, happened on Epping Rd in Wollert about 3.40pm on Wednesday.

Ambulance Victoria told 7NEWS.com.au that three people were taken to hospital by road, while one person was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital.

7NEWS chopper footage shows a red car crushed beneath a long truck, with bollards from the truck scattered across the road.

A blue car is also seen with its boot crumpled from the impact.

Epping Road was closed near Summerhill Road, with significant delays expected, and drivers are being urged to avoid the area.
