A man has died after being struck by a car in an early morning crash on a highway in northern NSW.

The man, who has not yet been formally identified, was allegedly hit by a car on the Oxley Highway near New Winton Road in Westdale, near Tamworth Airport, about 3.45am on Sunday.

Police officers provided assistance before paramedics arrived and treated him at the scene.

He was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the car, a 62-year-old woman, was not injured but was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established and will be forensically examined by police.

The Oxley Highway was closed in both directions until about 9.50am.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
