John Farnham’s sons have provided an encouraging update on the Australian music legend’s health, revealing he is doing well after being diagnosed with oral cancer in 2022.

Shortly after publicly announcing his diagnosis, Farnham underwent a marathon 12-hour surgery in a Melbourne hospital to remove a cancerous tumor.

In 2023 he was declared cancer-free but in May this year he announced his retirement from live performances due to the lasting physical impact of the surgeries.

Rob and James Farnham appeared Sunrise on Thursday as ambassadors for Daffodil Day, revealing their father was “doing good”.

“James recently had a baby and dad’s running around chasing him around, which is lovely to see,” Rob said.

Rob said the 77-year-old remained focused on his rehabilitation, with his recovering continuing one day at a time.

“He’s still recovering. It’s day-to-day. These things take time. It takes patience and dedication to work on your rehabilitation,” Rob said.

‘A special bond’

James recently moved in with his parents while changing houses, giving the family an opportunity to spend more time together following the birth of his son, Jet.

“It’s been really nice to live there and wake up every day and see mum and dad with Jet,” James said.

“Dad and Jet have a real special bond, so it’s really cute to see.”

The brothers are preparing for an all-star tribute to their father in Melbourne next month, featuring some of Australia’s biggest performers including Jimmy Barnes, Tina Arena and Keith Urban.

Rob will perform one of Farnham’s songs at the concert, something he has never done before.

“I’ve done a lot of singing and done a lot of shows before, but I’ve never performed one of my dad’s songs before, especially for him, which is pretty special,” he said.

“I’m just hoping that I can stay the course and not get too emotional and burst into tears while I’m singing.”

Rob said Farnham was overwhelmed by the calibre of performers joining the tribute.

“He’s pretty gobsmacked, really,” he said.

But James revealed his father had initially been reluctant to allow the concert to go ahead.

“He didn’t want it to happen for months and months and months,” James said.

“Once Head & Neck Cancer was sort of involved with that charity and some of the funds are going to that, that was the tipping point for him. He was able to accept that and it feels like he’s giving back.”

It remains unclear what role Farnham himself will play on the night, with James saying his father is “still making up his mind”.

Daffodil Day marks 40 years

Inspired by their father’s journey, Rob and James are serving as Daffodil Day ambassadors for the third consecutive year as the Cancer Council initiative marks its 40th anniversary.

“It’s definitely an amazing charity to be a part of, and we feel so privileged to be ambassadors for the third year,” Rob said.

“We’re looking to raise $5.5 million nationwide if possible,” James said.

Rob urged Australians not to ignore possible warning signs and to get checked if they notice something unusual.

“Get checked out because the smallest thing can be the end of it,” he said.
