It’s no secret that the Northern Hemisphere endured a major heatwave this year.

In fact, Google revealed “barrel pants” have climbed a whopping 520 per cent, with Australia ranking as the top country globally for searches for the trending style — and how to wear.

From high-street brands to Aussie labels, the barrel leg is shaping up to be a spring staple, with endless colours and lightweight fabrics to choose from.

Perfect for casual work outfits, long lunches and everything in between, there are plenty of ways to wear the silhouette.

THE ICONIC’s Head of Style, Nicole Adolphe says that the trending barrel trouser is back and bigger than ever this year.

“Barrel-leg styles continue to gain momentum because they offer a fresh alternative to wide-leg and straight-leg silhouettes while maintaining the same level of comfort.”

While denim variations are often styled with knitwear, tailoring and ballet flats, “milder days call for a simple tank or tee,” she explains.

For the office, look for a tailored top half, whether it’s a vest or blazer layered over a cami.

On the weekend, tuck in a loose, oversized tee — short or long sleeve — and pair with slides or sneakers, depending on the activity.

Take the barrel-leg pant into the evening with a kitten heel and satin-like shirt.
