A young Adelaide man has incredibly walked away with just a broken arm after his car was struck by a train in the city’s southwest.

The 26‑year‑old driver entered the level crossing near Ascot Park about 7am on Saturday and emergency crews were called to the intersection when the Mitsubishi station wagon was hit by an oncoming train.

The driver suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital, with only a suspected broken arm.

Matt, a nearby resident, heard the crash and quickly ran over to comfort the young driver “who couldn’t move his arm”.

“I heard this thundering, rolling, smashing sound,” he told 7NEWS.

“Through the front window you see the man was still alive... I ran around the other side, pulled the door open and just sat with him while calling emergency services.”

Matt was also able to phone the man’s parents, who were able to make it to the scene as he was treated by paramedics.

The train sustained extensive front end damage, with passenger Bray on board at the time of impact.

“The train suddenly stopped, you know, and then there was the intercom saying: ‘We’ve hit someone’,” Bray said.

Witnesses and emergency services couldn’t believe the driver escaped with non-life-threatening injuries.

“After like a, maybe like 45 minutes she told us the guy had only broken an arm, so it was quite lucky,” one witness said.

The collision forced major disruptions across the network, with services on the Seaford line suspended between Adelaide Railway Station and Oaklands, and trains on the Flinders line halted in both directions.

All services have since resumed.

No passengers or rail staff were injured.

Police are now investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
