A young boy has died after being hit by a vehicle in regional NSW.

The four-year-old was run over on Ingrid Pl in Dubbo about 6.40pm on Wednesday.

Paramedics rushed the boy to Dubbo Base Hospital where he died soon after.

A 24-year-old woman was arrested but later released after undergoing mandatory testing.

There were no other reports of injuries.

Specialist police are examining the scene and investigations are continuing.
