A man allegedly driving on a suspended learner’s licence has been charged after leading police on a wild high-speed chase through a regional city.

The 35-year-old first caught the attention of police when officers attempted to stop his Holden sedan on Union St in Goulburn in the NSW southern tablelands about midnight on Sunday.

Police say he failed to stop, sparking a pursuit through the Goulburn CBD where the Holden reached speeds of up to 125km/h in 60km/h zones.

Police deployed road spikes on Marys Mount Rd, but even that failed to bring the chase to an end.

The Holden continued to drive through Grafton Street Park onto Grafton St before dropping onto a nearby abandoned train line.

Police followed the car along the train line until it eventually came to a stop near Sydney Rd.

The driver then allegedly abandoned the vehicle and tried to flee into nearby bushland, sparking a foot pursuit.

He was arrested nearby and taken to Goulburn Police Station.

During the arrest, police allegedly found a backpack containing drug paraphernalia, which was seized for forensic examination.

Police allege the man was driving on a suspended learner’s permit.

He has been charged with police pursuit — not stop — drive at speed and driving while suspended.

The man was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Local Court 3 on Sunday, where he was again refused bail.

He is due to appear before Goulburn Local Court on August 19.
