The small aerial drone came within metres of them and Justin Borg from Coral Coast Helicopter Services feared contact could have been catastrophic.
“If a drone of that size would have struck the tail rotor it could easily disable the helicopter and that results basically in death,” he told 7NEWS.
“The only thing you can do there is talk to Jesus.”
Borg had been filming the Gascoyne Dash desert race from the air when he made a split-second decision.
“I just put my helicopter above (the drone) and just blew it down into the ground,” he said.

“It’s difficult in that situation where we’ve got these hobbyists or recreational drone users that just are oblivious to the rules,” Borg said.
Civil Aviation Safety Authority advisor Craig Peterson said the rules are “clear” that you cannot fly a drone near manned aircraft.
In the past two bushfire seasons, rogue drones have forced WA firefighters to ground their waterbombers at least eight times.
“If you cause those firebombing aircraft to be grounded you could actually be costing someone their life, their property, their home,” Peterson said.
