A man has died and another has been rushed to hospital after a violent incident at a Victorian caravan park in the early hours of Saturday.

Emergency services were called to Merrigum Caravan Park, about 200km north of Melbourne, just after 3am to reports a man had been assaulted.

When officers arrived, they found two men inside the park, on Waverley Ave in the town, both injured and unresponsive.

Local police performed CPR on one of the men but he couldn’t be revived.

The second man was taken to hospital in a stable condition with serious injuries that are believed to be non‑life‑threatening.

Homicide Squad detectives are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, with the Major Crime Scene Unit processing the site.
