Sydney commuters are facing major disruption after urgent overhead wiring repairs brought parts of the city’s train network to a standstill during Friday peak hour.

Overhead powerlines came down at Redfern Station, one of the city’s busiest transport hubs, causing widespread delays across the network.

Some trains have been left stranded at platforms or between stations while the incident remains ongoing.

Passengers on affected services were forced to leave carriages, with some evacuated and guided along the tracks to safety.

Emergency repairs are underway, with commuters warned to allow plenty of extra travel time and consider alternative transport.

Buses are being organised to replace some train services, Transport for NSW said.

It remains unclear when services will return to normal.

“Stops and platforms may change at short notice, so passengers are also advised to listen to announcements and check information displays for service updates,” TfNSW said.
