The Melbourne Star observation wheel will return to life on Thursday night after spending the best part of five years in darkness.

The iconic Docklands attraction is set to light up at 6.45pm in a special ceremony featuring fireworks.

New owners Jay and Jane Jones took over the Melbourne Star a year ago and have been working tirelessly to restore the landmark.

“It’s been a mountain to climb and we’re nearly at the top,” Jane Jones said. “We’ve changed all the motors, all the control wires and kilometres of lights.”

The wheel has been lighting up sporadically over recent days as part of testing in preparation for Thursday’s big reveal.

“From now on, it’ll light up as you drive into the city from the airport,” Jane said. “It’s something to be hopeful for when you come to Melbourne.”

The Jones family also own convention centres in Melbourne and Adelaide.

“We really want it to be good for Melbourne, really good for our business and for our staff who’ve worked hard and tirelessly to bring it back to life,” Jane said.

The Melbourne Star will be operational later in 2026.
