A man has been charged over an assault that was allegedly religiously motivated in Sydney’s southwest.

Police were told a 51-year-old man, with several other men, were handing out religious flyers on South Terrace in Bankstown on Saturday morning.

He allegedly became involved in an argument about the flyers with another man who had been walking past.

The pair were not known to one another.

“During the argument, the 51-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by the man,” police said in a statement.

The 51-year-old man did not need any medical attention.

“Shortly after midday, a 40-year-old man approached officers on patrol at Bankstown Railway Station,” police said.

“He was placed under arrest and taken to Bankstown Police Station, where he was charged with common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.”

The 40-year-old man was granted conditional bail to face Bankstown Local court on February 26.
