A teenager who survived Tasmania’s Hillcrest Primary School jumping castle disaster has died in an e‑bike crash on New Year’s Eve.

Fifteen-year-old Lucas Reid was killed when his e‑bike struck a pole in Devonport, in the state’s northwest, about 7.30pm on December 31.

Tributes are flowing for the teen, who had made a remarkable recovery after suffering serious injuries in the 2021 tragedy.

Tasmania Police said early indications suggest Lucas’ e‑bike collided with a telephone pole on Dons Head Rd, a rural stretch on the outskirts of Devonport.

Despite efforts from a nearby resident, he died at the scene.

Lucas spent weeks in hospital and required a wheelchair after the inflatable jumping castle he was on was lifted 10 metres into the air by a powerful gust of wind during an end‑of‑year celebration at Hillcrest Primary School on December 16, 2021.

Six children — Chace Harrison, Jalailah Jayne‑Maree Jones, Zane Mellor, Addison Stewart, Jye Sheehan and Peter Dodt — were killed when the Taz‑Zorb inflatable was blown across the school oval in what was later described in court as a “mini tornado”.

Lucas’ survival and long recovery had been a source of inspiration for his family and community.

His death has renewed heartbreak for a community still recovering from the Hillcrest tragedy, with police continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
