Australia’s big four are back together for the first time in over 12 months.

The bowling quartet of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon will all play in the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, starting on Thursday, while allrounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster have both been included in the XI.

Victorian quick Scott Boland, who averages 18.58 in his 19 Tests, is again the unlucky bowler to miss out, with Hazlewood just shading him for the final spot in the team.

Australian selectors opted for four quicks in three of the five Ashes Tests last summer, including the final two, with wickets more conducive to pace bowling that offered little for the spinners.

Boland played in all five and took 20 wickets at 24.95, striking at 47.9, while Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon all missed chunks of the series with injuries.

But revealing the team on Wednesday, Aussie skipper Cummins said the spin of Lyon would play an important role in the Top End, meaning one of Hazlewood or Boland had to miss out.

“They’re both pretty class, aren’t they?” Cummins said of the pair.

“We were pretty certain we wanted ‘Lyono’ in the side, so (it came down to) working out what the make-up of the quicks were.

“It’s always a pretty tight call. It’s one of those ones where there’s not much you can say to Scotty other than obviously there’s a lot of cricket coming up.

“But he knows his worth and how good he is. I’m sure he’ll be out there at some point pretty soon.”

Australia have at least 20 Tests, and possibly 21 if they make the World Test Championship final, between now and the end of next year’s Ashes series in England.

Green has held his spot in the side amid a lean run of red-ball form, with selectors making room for both he and fellow batting allrounder Webster.

Green is set to bat at five, with Webster at seven, and keeper Alex Carey remains at six following his golden summer with the bat.

Travis Head remains at the top of the order after his inspired move to open the batting when Usman Khawaja went down with a back injury ahead of the second innings of the first Ashes Test in Perth last year. Head scored a match-winning century in that match and has not looked back since.

He will again be partnered with Jake Weatherald, in whom the selectors are keeping faith after a middling series against England, averaging just 22.33 with only one half-century.

Marnus Labuschagne is also under pressure to score runs, having not reached three figures since July 2023, but will slot in at his usual spot of No.3, with Steve Smith completing the side at four.
