Israel’s culture minister has vowed to revoke the citizenship of two Israeli filmmakers after their documentary on the Gaza war won a major prize at the Venice Film Festival.

In a post on his X account on Sunday, Miki Zohar said he would move to revoke the citizenship of Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor following the success of their documentary NAZA, which won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

He described the film’s victory as “shocking” and labeled the documentary “vile,” adding that its creators have harmed Israel’s image to gain international recognition.

He further noted that their actions amounted to “treason” against Israel and explained that his recent efforts to make important reform in cinema were intended to prevent public money from being spent on works that harm soldiers and Israel.

The minister said he would take immediate action to pursue the revocation of the filmmakers’ citizenship over their conduct.

According to the Venice Film Festival’s synopsis, NAZA explores what it describes as the mechanisms behind Israel’s “calculated mass killing” of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, featuring testimony from Israeli military intelligence officers and soldiers.

The documentary premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday and was awarded the Special Jury Prize on Saturday.

It also received a lengthy standing ovation from the audience following its premiere in Venice.
