Carlton fans are rejoicing with news that interim coach Josh Fraser will officially apply for the full-time position.

After weeks and weeks of batting off questions about the full-time role, Fraser has now informed club powerbrokers that he is happy to be interviewed for the senior coaching position.

The news is music to Carlton fans’ ears, who were chanting Fraser’s name after their stirring win against St Kilda on Sunday, his 10th victory from 12 starts.

It now seems likely Carlton will play in the AFL’s inaugural Wildcard Round, a result that seemed impossible before he took over from Michael Voss after Round 9.

After the win against St Kilda, which gave the Blues a two game buffer over the Saints in 11th and 12th respectively, Fraser explained why he had been reluctant to declare his intentions.

“I’ve just tried to stay as narrow as I can and it’s been challenging with a lot of the questioning and different things, but I still feel such a responsibility to this role as interim coach,” he said.

“That’s what I needed to and have focused all of my energy on — because I would be doing a disservice, not only to our players, but our staff and everyone, if I started to stray away from that.

“Clearly I’ve had to think through some things, but that hasn’t occupied a lot of my thinking and all the hypotheticals haven’t either. Most of my energy has been focused on this playing group and footy club.”

The other candidates for the position are St Kilda’s Corey Enright, Geelong’s James Kelly, Fremantle’s Jaymie Graham and Hawthorn’s Daniel Giansiracusa and they all spoke to the club over a week ago.

Fraser will officially present in the coming days but club powerbrokers won’t make an appointment until the Blues’ season is over, unless, that is, to declare their intentions to endorse Fraser.

The Blues are eight points clear in 10th with games against the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle to come.

“(It’s) not about daring to dream,” Fraser said.

“I think the thing what’s taking us forward is we are just attaching ourselves to the work that we need to do.”
