Australia’s netball team has been copping viral criticism over their uniforms during the Commonwealth Games, with the one-piece dress often hitching up while they are playing, and the players regular spotted yanking them back down.

The Sun newspaper in the UK have called it a “kit-astrophe” while other Australian outlets have dubbed it a wardrobe “malfunction.”

“Such a shame Diamonds ran out of material before they could finish their dresses. Some of the girls look uncomfortable as f***,” BigRedNetball said on social media.

While another said on Instagram: “Were the dresses meant to be singlets?”

But Diamonds star Sophie Garbin has defended the uniforms, while admitting they’re always adjusting it.

“I feel like as a netballer, I’m always tugging my dress down,” the 29-year-old West Australian said.

“Obviously, we’ve noticed lots of the comments from other people.

“But I feel like on the court, we’re used to dresses coming up and down, and I don’t think it’s affecting our performance, so it’s OK.

“We might have a look at what we can do in the next couple of days, but we love our dress.

“We love what Valour have done with the pattern and the fabric and everything, so we’re really proud to wear it.”

She also posted a video, dancing in the dress in her room, with the caption: “How we feel about wearing the most talked about thing at the Comm Games … We love it 🍑💚🤪🧚🏼🥰💛💎,” while lip syncing “because it’s iconic”.

That video also got a massive response, with over 10,000 likes, including the CommGamesAus account saying: “You tell ‘em.”

Despite Garbin’s backing, it has been reported that adjustments might be made to the uniform before the Diamonds step out for their next match.

In their bid to win consecutive gold medals at the Comm Games, the Diamonds have started in sensational form, dismantling old rival and contender England after destroying Tonga in their opening game.

Australia, who next tackle Malawi in the third of five pool games, are aiming to go back-to-back for the second time in Games history, after successfully defending their 1998 title in 2002.

The Diamonds have never missed a netball final since the sport was added to the Games program in 1998 and are the most successful team with four gold medals.
