New tests on dishwasher detergents show lesser-known brands are now giving a clean almost as good as the market leader — for a fraction of the price.

Consumer group Choice has put 34 detergents through lab tests, rating their performance on removing tough stains like egg yolk, baked-on cheese, rice starch and bolognese sauce.

The overall winner was Finish Powerball Ultimate 0% Tabs, which scored 77 per cent in the tests and cost $1.07 per wash.

On quality, it was only a whisker ahead of Earth Choice All-In-1 Dish Tablets, which scored 76 per cent but cost just 42c per load. 

Similarly, Coles Ultra Dishwasher Tablets scored 75 per cent and cost 14c each.

Other detergents which scored well in the tests were Bosisto’s Supreme Plus Dishwasher Capsules (75 per cent), Ecostore Ultra Power Dishwasher Tablets (75 per cent) and Undo This Mess Super Ultra Pro Infinity Plus Dish Tablets (75 per cent).

Meanwhile, a raft of formulas scored above 70 per cent and are easy on the wallet too, including Aldi Power Force Platinum Dishwasher Capsules (24c each), Woolworths Shine Optimum All In 1 Ultimate Clean Dishwashing Pods (26c each) and Eco Planet Automatic Dishwasher Powder (23c each).

“This goes to show that if you shop smart, you can get a great clean while saving money,” said Choice tester Chris Barnes.

“If you have a good dishwasher, then you won’t necessarily need to buy the best performing detergent.

“You can opt for a cheaper product instead, or one that aligns with your ethical or environmental priorities.”
