A shooting survivor has given harrowing evidence against the man accused of murdering his mother, stepfather and brother outside a cattle property.

Ross Tighe relived the horror day in court on Tuesday as the first to testify against 63-year-old grazier and neighbour Darryl Valroy Young.

Young allegedly opened fire on the family on August 4, 2022, after they had arranged to meet at his front gate in the North Queensland town of Bogie.

Tighe told the court Young had accused of them of stealing calves.

He alleged Young told them “I’ll end this once and for all”, then “casually” walked to his car and “pulled out a gun”.

Tighe told the jury his stepfather was shot first in the face, then he was shot in the stomach.

“I turned around and started running. I fell down five, six times. I just wanted to get out of there,” he told the court.

As he took cover behind long grass, he heard two more gunshots.

“I was telling myself on the way back ... I know they’re going to be dead. Try not to look,” he told the court.

But he did see his brother.

“There was a bullet hole in his head,” he said.

Then his mother was shot in the head through the window of a car, the court was told.

The family’s only survivor got away in a ute before flagging down help, retracing his steps four years later in court.

Young has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and one of attempted murder.

The trial continues in Townsville.
