His five-decade-long career featured more than 300 million book sales, including 1979 novel Kane And Abel, and a seven-part series titled The Clifton Chronicles.

He died a day before his final book, Adam And Eve, and was set to appear at a fan event during the Cheltenham Festival.

HarperCollins remembered Archer as a “master storyteller” whose fans “meant everything to him” in a statement to the BBC.

Fellow British author and broadcaster Gyles Brandeth had shared images of him and Archer at an event just a day prior to the sudden death.

“I can’t believe that Archer — who was always so alive — is suddenly dead,” Brandeth said.

“We had a wonderful day together yesterday — as anyone who was there will tell you, he was in brilliant form on stage yesterday celebrating the publication of his 50th and final best-selling novel.”

Archer waded into the world of politics in the 1990s, becoming the first conservative candidate to be selected as a candidate for mayor of London.

But his candidacy ended abruptly in 1999 after it was found he had lied in a 1987 civil case against a newspaper which accused him of paying a sex worker.

He was sentenced to four years behind bars for perjury and perverting the course of justice in 2001 and was released in early 2003.

Despite the controversy, his worldwide fame as a conservative sparked waves of tributes from British politicians.

“Jeffrey Archer was a dear friend and an extraordinary human being,” Reform UK MP Nadhim Zahawi said in a post to social media.

“His gift for storytelling was matched by his wit, warmth and boundless energy.

“Life was never dull in Jeffrey’s company.”
