The Renault Symbioz has arrived, replacing the Captur that previously opened the French brand's local lineup.

Priced from $36,990 before on-road costs, the Symbioz is the first model Renault has offered with a full-hybrid powertrain in Australia, despite the brand fielding several such models overseas.

It's also slightly larger than the Captur – which technically lives on in Australia as the Mitsubishi ASX – but still competes in the crowded small SUV segment, sharing similar dimensions with vehicles like the popular Toyota Corolla Cross.

The Symbioz is available with both mild- and full-hybrid powertrains, increasing the variety of Renault SUVs available in Australia. It joins the electric Scenic E-Tech and Megane E-Tech, the manual-equipped Duster, and the refreshed mild-hybrid Arkana in the brand's ongoing model revitalisation.

The mild-hybrid powertrain available at the bottom of the Symbioz range comprises a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a 12-volt hybrid system. It sends drive to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch auto – similar to automatic variants of the Duster.

The 'Full Hybrid', meanwhile, adds a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery alongside a 1.8-litre four. It's also front-wheel drive, but utilises a unique transmission inspired by Formula 1 technology – we've explained this at a top-line level below.

Otherwise, the Symbioz is available in two well-equipped trim levels. Both share the same tech, which comprises a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a 10.4-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment system, the latter of which has Google Built-in with voice recognition.

Moving to the top-spec Esprit Alpine brings sportier design cues, as well as improved seats with power adjustment. It doesn't bring any performance improvements, though, and it's only available as a Full Hybrid.

The Symbioz arrives as the third of six new or updated Renault models arriving in Australia as part of an 18-month onslaught, with the remainder to arrive in early 2027 at the latest.

Renault Australia also predicts the Symbioz could become its best-selling passenger model locally, though that isn't a particularly high bar. So far in 2026, that distinction belongs to the Koleos SUV with 525 deliveries, but the Duster and Scenic E-Tech are closing the gap.

But Renault's Australian best-sellers continue to be its commercial vehicles, as the Master van has been on top for quite some time. If the Symbioz does prove popular, it would be significant in boosting the brand's overall sales.

Over the first seven months of 2026, Renault sales were down 5.6 per cent on the same period in 2025.

Drivetrains and Efficiency

Two powertrain options are available for the Symbioz. The base Techno can be had with both mild- and full-hybrid options, while the Esprit Alpine is exclusively full-hybrid.

While the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission in the mild-hybrid is fairly conventional, the 'Hybrid Transmission' is unique to Renault. The brand says it was developed with direct knowledge from the Alpine Formula One team.

The Full Hybrid's electric motor has two ratios, while there's a dog-clutch mechanical transmission with four mechanical gears. Dog clutches are typically used in motorsport transmissions to reduce shift times.

Renault says the two electric ratios and four mechanical gears combine to create up to 15 possible operating combinations.

Further, the full-hybrid powertrain can drive on both petrol and electric power individually, or a combination of the two for maximum power. The mild-hybrid system, in contrast, cannot propel the car on its own.

Safety

The 2026 Renault Symbioz has yet to be crash-tested by ANCAP and is therefore unrated. It does, however, have a four-star safety rating from overseas authority Euro NCAP.
