Ever since the rise of “communist Russia” (USSR) after World War II, the United States has been fighting communism tooth and nail. Have we asked the question why?
The general myth propagated by American presidents and congressmen along with powerful American news media is that, under communism, people have no freedom and the United States stands for individual freedom.
But was it the lack of individual freedom that bothered the United States?
Well, if America was concerned about individual freedom, it would not have supported the most brutal regimes of history, isn’t it?
- Those regimes include the
- Samosas of Nicaragua,
- Shah of Iran,
- Batista of Cuba,
- Pinochet of Chile,
- The generals in Brazil, Bolivia, Honduras and other Latin American countries,
- Marcos of the Philippines,
- Diem Brothers of South Vietnam, …
- The list is long.

Even today, in the 21st century, America supports the most brutal king of Saudi Arabia besides other ruthless rulers of Qatar, Jordan, Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries
United States’ support of Israel’s most repressive and brutal occupation of Palestine-Gaza as well as Jerusalem is well-known.

Today, America is the biggest customer of China, gobbling up billions of dollars’ worth Chinese goods even though people have no freedom in China.
America claims to be the beacon of freedom. It boasts about supporting democracy and individual freedom all over the world and yet we must realize that it is not true.
On the contrary, America is the biggest supporter of ruthless dictatorships, brutal kings and repressive juntas who deny their people basic rights of individual freedoms.
So throughout history and even today, why has America supported and still supports all these brutal regimes where people are brutally suppressed?
The answer lies in one simple world: “capitalism”. The 30th president of the United States, President Calvin Coolidge has famously said, “The chief business of the American people is business”; the more appropriate meaning of this quote will be “The main business of America is business and profits.”
It is really true. America’s main interest anywhere is guided by business and profits. In achieving these goals, America would care less about the freedom of the people or of their well-being.
So why oppose communism? Well, under so-called “communist regimes” until China opened up, America could not do any business, exploit these countries’ resources or its labor.
The United States feared that as communism spread, the other countries too will be out of reach to do business, exploit and dominate. America could not exploit these communist countries through business dealings. But dictatorships or brutal kingdoms were open for exploitation as far as the rulers were rewarded with money, arms and/or military protection against their restless people. America provided all this in exchange for their natural resources and/or their cheap labor.
The United States also hates socialism. Socialism has been made a dirty word since several decades in America. Why? Because socialism means “a theory, principle, or scheme of social organization which places the means of production and distribution in the hands of the community.” What is wrong with that?
Capitalism means…”the economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately owned and operated for profit.”
While socialism looks after the welfare of the whole community, capitalism basically allows few people to get very rich at the expense of the majority.
United States hates socialism because that means under this system, those who are already wealthy cannot become wealthier and richer by exploiting those who are the working-class people. Capitalism creates more and more inequality while socialism generates more equality.
What should be the goal of a democratic country?
It should be treating every citizen equally and looking after the majority of its citizens, not just the few.
So why does America hate socialism?
Because under socialism, those who are already superrich will not be able to amass more and more fortune by exploiting the poor class and it is these super rich who have the power, who control our politicians, who control our domestic and foreign policy. They are the ones who control all the news that an average American hears on radio, sees on TV or reads in newspapers.
They are the ones who mold public opinion by brain washing most Americans into thinking that “capitalism is the best economic system, what else is there?
“Communism has failed and there is nothing else better than capitalism.”
They have created this myth because it serves their purpose; it serves their self-interest.
They have created the false belief that “under capitalism, there is freedom, anybody can come up if he/she works hard enough. Rising tide lifts all the boats.”
Tell this to millions of hard-working American workers who toil for 40-50 or more hours per week and get only two weeks of vacation per year and are not able to make two ends meet. In fact, rising tide seems to lift only the yachts.
At least, one can still understand America’s hatred of communism. But why hate socialism? Look at Scandinavian countries.
They have devised an economic system that can be called “social economy.” They have created a social democracy where there are very few rich people and fewer poor ones. They have a healthy equality within their countries. Though the taxes are high, people don’t mind it because everyone is taken care of from cradle to grave. The healthcare is free for all, the college education is free; they have paid for maternity leaves for working women, and a host of other government services for their citizens.
Once Americans realize the value and benefits of a social economy, they will never settle for a capitalist economy.
And that is what the super-rich Americans who wield enormous control over American politicians are afraid of.
Under socialism, they know that they will lose their power. In reality, it is these one-percenters (the super-rich capitalist Americans) who hate socialism and will try their best not to allow any other economic system to take root.
If majority of Americans realize these facts, they will never support capitalism.
And if majority of them take action, unite and actively demand to replace capitalism with fair, democratic, social economy, the capitalism will be gone forever from this country and America will be a social democracy where equality, fairness and freedom will reign supreme. Ultimately, many countries of the world will follow America’s example.
