Australian cricket star Travis Head says returning to the MCG to meet fans on Sunday was “the least we can do” after the Boxing Day Test was wrapped up in two days on a controversially grass wicket.

Record crowds packed into the famous ground on Friday and Saturday to witness one of the more unusual Ashes matches in recent memory.

Twenty wickets fell on the opening day before Australia’s batting woes continued the following morning, and England put the foot down to wrap up their first victory in the country since January 2011.

As after Perth’s two-day Test earlier this summer, food destined to be sold at the cricket was donated to a charity partner to feed those experiencing homelessness or sleeping rough.

Cricket Australia discussed staging an exhibition match with MCC boss Stuart Fox suggesting he was keen to host the event.

“There were alternatives discussed and that’s really a matter for Cricket Australia because they provide the content,” Fox said on Sunday morning.

“There was talk of players coming out and having a hit today but that didn’t get up, and I know Cricket Australia have responded with having a live site here for fans to come down.”

Thousands rocked up to Yarra Park to meet the Australian cricket team for photos and autographs.

“I’m not playing these guys (England) in a one-dayer — no chance,” a smiling Head said of the exhibition talks.

“Unfortunately it’s just how it falls (a two-day Test match), and we’ve got a lot more time to talk about teams and selection and Sydney and Noosa and all sorts (laughs).

“I don’t know, everyone will talk about something for the next — I don’t know, what day is it today?”

At that point Head looked down at his watch and shared his own personal silver lining: “It’s my birthday tomorrow so it’s nice to be off on a birthday for once.”

The soon-to-be 32-year-old said it was nice to give back to fans even though he would “much rather be playing cricket and hopefully winning a game”.

“But it’s the least we can do,” Head said.

On cricket matters, Head threw his support behind opening partner Jake Weatherald after a mixed start to his Test career.

Weatherald has made three single-figure scores and only one half-century in eight innings this series, averaging 20.85 on what Head described as “challenging” wickets.

“He showed a lot of glimpses over his first four Tests, and it’s not always going to go your way,” Head said of his fellow South Australian on Sunday.

“There’s a lot of guys that have looked like they’ve been under the pump with the bat who are some of our best in our generation, so it can be a tough way to start your international career.

“But l think he’s a good enough player to play international cricket.”

Weatherald has been trapped lbw three times and caught behind twice, and overall dismissed seven times in four different ways by England’s bowlers throughout the series.

“Definitely you can say it’s a positive that that is the case, that he hasn’t got a trend,” Head said.

“The runs haven’t been there in the last couple of Tests, but (he) played a crucial innings for us in Brisbane.

“So over a series you’re looking for moments in time that will win you a series.”

Weatherald appears likely to survive the axe for Sydney but he is among four players under increasing selection pressure.

Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green have both struggled to varying degrees while Usman Khawaja, who batted at No.5 in Adelaide and Melbourne, has been tipped to see the writing on the wall and retire.

Australia hold an unbeatable 3-1 lead heading into the fifth and final Test in Sydney starting on January 4.
