Hero dogs have chased away a man who jumped from a bush and attacked two women on a morning walk, police allege.

The man fled with the eight dogs in tow into a Melbourne freeway tunnel just moments after he is accused of trying to assault the pair about 11.30am on Tuesday.

Police said a 67-year-old from Toorak and a 39-year-old from Glen Iris were strolling along Gardiners Creek in Kooyong when they were ambushed.

The man allegedly put his arms around one of the dogwalkers, but was pushed away.

It is then claimed he tried to pull the other towards him, but she escaped.

“The dogs then chased the male into a nearby tunnel under the Monash Freeway, even managing to tear off a piece of his clothing,” Victoria Police said.

7NEWS caught up with the two women on Wednesday, and they are both OK.

Authorities have released a facial composite of the man they want to speak to.

Police described him as being of African appearance. He was wearing a black and grey hooded top, a black face covering, black tracksuit pants, white socks, and slides.

He was also carrying a large, bright blue backpack.

The Bayside Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team is treating the incident as an attempted sexual assault and have appealed for witnesses.

Community stunned

The area is very popular with dogwalkers, and the community has been left shaken.

“It’s the third incident here over a number of years,” one person told 7NEWS.

Another said: “It’s kind of shocking that sort of thing does happen but it’s awesome the dogs were there to step in.”
