Two people have been killed when a freight train struck a car in regional Victoria.

The crash happened at a railway crossing on Reddies Rd in Cressy, 77km west of Geelong, about 10.15am on Tuesday.

The two people inside the car died before they could be taken to hospital.

Only the train driver and two staff were onboard the train at the time.

The tray of the ute, which has been completely torn off the vehicle, can be seen at the very front of the train.

“The circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be established and an investigation is ongoing,” Victoria Police said.

The Hamilton Hwy is closed in both directions due to the crash.
