TV host Melanie Bracewell has become engaged in a public spat with fellow comedian Dave Hughes after mocking his recent political tirades.

Hughes has become an unlikely face of the backlash against Labor as he repeatedly condemns the the party’s changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax, accusing the government of lying to voters and mismanaging public money.

The 55-year-old comedian, who has built his own real estate portfolio, has denied he is motivated by personal interests and insisted his financial position is secure.

Bracewell took aim at Hughes after his repeated attacks on the Albanese Government’s tax reforms, which he claims will make it harder for young people to own a home and succeed in the property market.

“You gotta feel for Hughesy,” she wrote in a post to X. “He’s living from his tenants’ paycheck to tenants’ paycheck.”

Bracewell revealed Hughes privately confronted her over the joke.

“Mel, I’m not part of the thievery gang. I’m trying to stop them. So many honest people are afraid to speak up because of the real fear of violent reprisal. You are doing the less fortunate a disservice by attacking people who speak out against corruption,” Hughes wrote in response to her comments.

Bracewell returned serve, responding with, “It’s a joke Hughesy, remember when you did those!”.

In a TikTok video detailing the exchange, Bracewell said freedom of speech means comedians are free to target Hughes.

“The thing about freedom of speech is we’re also free to make fun of you if we think that maybe the guy with like 100 houses isn’t really looking out for the best interests of the battler,” she said.

“He’s a battler, just trying to put eight roofs over his head, you know.”

Bracewell then revealed Hughes had sent her what she described as “an essay” through private Instagram messages.

“The corruption by Labor Govts in Victoria and Federally is sending the country completely broke. That’s my focus in politics,” Hughes wrote.

“I’m sick of politicians thinking they can control the public to believe they are helping the disadvantaged while really just getting stinking rich themselves through outright thievery.”

However, the lengthy message appeared to arrive at an inconvenient time for Bracewell.

“It’s my birthday Hughesy I’m not reading all this,” she responded.

Hughes lampooned over political stance

Hughes has spent months attacking the Albanese Government over its budget, spending and alleged corruption.

He previously accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of breaking promises over capital gains tax and negative gearing and declared he would abandon Labor after voting for the party all his life.

His increasingly frequent political videos have attracted both support and ridicule online, with comedian and actor Dave Thornton going viral for his Hughesy impressions on TikTok.

In one video, Thornton impersonates Hughes and complains while driving on the left-hand side of the road that everything in Australia is “on the left”, before blaming Albanese for taking milk from his fridge.

“I don’t drink milk and I don’t negative gear and everything in Australia isn’t on the left and my Elbow includes a W only criminals get a W under that other one,” Hughes commented on the video.

In another clip, Thornton impersonated Hughes while watching the World Cup, prompting another lengthy response from the comedian.

“Keep using me mate, I’m happy to help a fellow Aussie get ahead in this world, and don’t even want a cut, unlike your completely corrupted hero @albomp,” Hughes wrote.

“The stealing of public money is off the charts. The disadvantaged will suffer the most. Have a look into it.

“You then will get my crusade and you could use the great impersonation to put pressure on that disgrace, not to take it off him.”
