Toby Greene has revealed newly appointed Essendon coach Mark McVeigh has already reached out to the GWS captain about a possible reunion at the Bombers.

The unrestricted free agent is considering a move home to Victoria to be closer to family but remains adamant he is not “definitely going” — yet.

He will begin meeting clubs as early as this weekend, starting with Geelong, while the Bombers have now emerged on the scene.

Greene volunteered the information on his Ausmerican Aces podcast as he opened up on taking “the next couple of weeks” to discuss what’s next with wife Georgia.

“I’ve probably thought about it the last week for the first time,” he said.

“I put it to the back of my mind the whole season. As much as people might find that hard to believe — that’s the truth.

“I felt like a lot of people in Melbourne or friends, maybe even some people at the club, feel like I’m definitely going, which is not true.

“I’ve never felt (that). If I was definitely going I’d say that now, I’d be up front with the Giants and make it easy for them.

“We’ve got a decision to make and that’s where it sits.”

Greene then confirmed his plan to talk to the Cats and McVeigh, claiming he does not yet know from his manager if any other clubs are interested.

“Spike has reached out as well since he got the (Essendon) job and asked could I catch up,” he said.

“I said I’d catch up with him but it wasn’t exactly what I was thinking all year at all. So we’ll see how that goes.

“Me and Georgia and the fam, we’ll have a good think about that over the next week or two. Write that all down, write the pros and cons — not that there’s really cons of either.

“I’m in a fortunate position and just do, I guess, whatever feels right.”

Greene said if he remains with GWS he will do so hopeful of contending for another premiership, despite missing the finals this year.

“One thing I want to do with them is win a flag and that’s the best thing I could ever do in footy,” he said.

“Could win two or three somewhere else, it wouldn’t be as good as one at the Giants. That’s the basis of my decision staying at the Giants, because family life’s definitely harder up here with no support.

“Not impossible but it’s definitely harder, and we want to have more kids, and that becomes a bit more of a challenge.

“That’s the family part of it, haven’t even got to the finances or money part yet.”

Essendon could offer the best deal as they rebuild their list but, even with Greene’s arrival, would likely struggle to contend for a premiership before he retires.

Geelong boast Greene’s best friend and former GWS teammate Jeremy Cameron while the Cats are also in for Port Adelaide restricted free agent Zak Butters and potentially St Kilda ruckman Rowan Marshall.

“I’ll meet the footy club (Cats) and what they think their direction is the next few years,” Greene said.

“That’s probably what I’m worried about, I couldn’t care (less) about their weights facilities. I’ll do weights at Anytime Fitness if I have to.

“I don’t think we’ll meet at the footy club ... I’ve never been one for really caring too much about facilities.”

Greene, meanwhile, said he is a “big chance” to drop the captaincy if he sticks with GWS.

“And I think that might be the best thing for the club and for the guys below me to grow themselves,” he said.
