Rescuers in Victoria have pulled off a major operation after two wedding guests tumbled down a six-metre drain.

The rescue kicked off in the early hours of Saturday morning after the guests slipped away from a reception on Hopkins Point Rd, Allansford just outside of Warrnambool in Victoria’s east.

Police said a 36-year-old man from Terang disappeared from the wedding at the rural property about 11.30pm on Friday.

Two other guests noticed their friend was missing, and set off in search of him.

They found the 36-year-old man trapped at the bottom of the drain about 1.35am.

One of the searching guests, a 27-year-old Echuca man, “attempted to rescue his friend, however also fell into the drain,” Victoria Police said.

The woman he went out searching with called emergency services.

“In the meantime, the 36-year-old managed to reach the surface of the ditch unaided,” police said.

“A multi-agency response was launched to rescue his mate.”

Victoria Police, the Country Fire Authority, Ambulance Victoria and SES units were all involved in the rescue operation, as firefighters set up their rope systems to winch a firefighter down into the drain and free the 27-year-old man who had become stuck, SES said.

He had suffered upper body injuries in the fall, and was taken to hospital in a stable condition, Ambulance Victoria said.

The 36-year-old man was also taken to hospital, with a medical condition, in a stable condition.
