Qantas’ direct flight between Perth and London will take a detour from Wednesday as escalating tensions in the Middle East force the major Aussie airline to reroute its path.

The non-stop service will now include a mandatory refuelling stop in Singapore which will allow the carrier to avoid certain airspaces and ensure the safety of its passengers and crew.

While the detour adds time to the journey, Qantas has confirmed the stopover will also allow the plane to carry a heavier load, opening up seats for an additional 60 passengers per flight.

Qantas has indicated this is a temporary measure and the situation remains under constant review.

A Qantas spokesperson confirmed that while the London route requires these immediate adjustments, all other international and domestic flights are operating as usual.

It remains unknown at this time when a return to the direct 17-hour flight will be feasible.
