A man will front court accused of spreading explicit images of eight women created with artificial intelligence.

Posters featuring the AI-generated content have allegedly been spotted across southeast Queensland since February 2021.

Police allege the posters included a woman’s face “superimposed onto the bodies of women depicted performing explicit sexual acts” and describing them as sex workers.

They also allegedly featured their full names, social media usernames and employment details.

An investigation was launched after posters were located at multiple locations including a public area in Gatton, a rural town between Toowoomba and Brisbane, on May 26.

Police raided a home in Cleveland, Redland, on July 22 and allegedly seized a number of electronic devices, printers and a bundle of AI-generated posters.

Further searches of the home also allegedly located a stun gun, three long firearms and 25 rounds of ammunition.

A 52-year-old man was arrested at the home and later charged with 43 offences, including 27 counts of distributing intimate images, six counts of unlawful stalking and four counts of unlawful possession of a firearm.

He was refused bail and is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 19.

Police said eight alleged victims have been identified, but investigations remain ongoing.

Ipswich Detective Acting Inspector Tim Martin urged the public to beware of the “emerging technology”.

“Artificial intelligence is an emerging technology but using it to create and distribute abusive or degrading material is not beyond the reach of police,” Martin said.

“We will investigate these matters thoroughly and hold offenders to account

“Instead, report it to police so we can investigate and prevent further harm to the community.”
