The grieving mother of an Australian soldier killed fighting in the Ukraine war has called on more volunteers to join the frontline fight against Russia.

Cassandra Parker braved the journey into the war zone for a memorial service in honour of her lost son, 24-year-old Brock Greenwood, on the anniversary of his death two years ago.

Parker was presented with a special medallion to honour his service, and said she was thankful for the recognition.

“I feel Australia has forgotten our boys. I think they sort of should be recognised,” she said.

Two years ago, she had done everything she could to stop him going and urged others not to follow him, exclusively telling 7NEWS at the time: “It’s not a game. It’s a hellish war.”

But today, she has made a complete reversal.

“I don’t want anyone else to die, but I think Ukraine, these people need help. They’re fighting for their freedom and their country,” Parker said.

So far, at least 14 Australians have been killed fighting in the Ukraine war since it began in February 2022.

The latest was 26-year-old former Australian soldier Samuel Pedrazzini, who was sent to Europe to train Ukrainians but ended up dying for them.

“If Russia get away with winning this war, they’re just going to keep going,” Parker said.

Ukraine welcomes the help of foreign recruits and has produced promotional videos encouraging volunteers.

“I was living in Australia and I had a pretty normal life,” one recruit says in the video.

“Always choose war, but sometimes war chooses us.”

Parker said Ukraine needed as much help as it could get.

“If you’ve got the experience and this is what you want to do, I would say, come and help. These people need help,” she said.

The Australian government strongly advises against going.

Australians who are killed while fighting for Ukraine do now get official recognition at the war memorial in Canberra.

Brock Greenwood’s family have applied for inclusion, hoping his sacrifice will be forever remembered.

They applied six months ago.

“We’re still waiting, but we’re hoping soon,” Parker said.
