A man has fronted court in relation to a shooting which sparked a major hours-long manhunt involving heavily armed officers, as police revealed they had arrested a sixth person.

Christopher John Shanks, 30, is accused of driving the alleged victim, 32, to bushland outside Geraldton, 400km north of Perth in WA’s Mid West, where he “took part in assaulting” him before driving off.

Police found the man seriously injured and alone on Allen Rd in Moonyoonooka just before 1am on Wednesday, having been called to the street by alarming reports of a “firearm incident”. He was then taken to hospital.

Shanks, from Wonthella, appeared briefly in Geraldton Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with unlawful act or omission with intent to harm, and wilfully destroy evidence.

The shooting sparked a significant police response, with officers taking five people into custody at a home in Utakarra, about 10 minutes from the shooting.

Some were released shortly after and only Shanks has been charged at this stage although a sixth person — a man in his 30s — has been arrested as part of the police investigation.

The injured man, understood to have been shot in the leg, has since been discharged from hospital.

On Wednesday, Acting Superintendent Ben Huggett said police believe at least three people were involved in the incident.

Huggett said the injured man was cooperating with authorities.

Police have not confirmed if they have recovered a firearm.

Shanks will remain in custody before returning to court at the end of October.
