The grieving mother of Molly Ticehurst says there was a failure to protect her daughter from harm, as the sentencing hearing of her killer ex-boyfriend wrapped up today.

Billings admits stabbing Ticehurst to death while on bail for rape and domestic violence charges against the 28-year-old.

In videos he made beforehand, Billings said: “It’s an eye for an eye. If I’m going to be punished either way, then okay, I’m going to go crazy.”

The court heard from two psychiatric experts who disagreed with each other about how much Billings’ depression was a factor.

In a letter from prison, he wrote: “I’m not a heartless monster like they say,” and “I’m sorry as a person can be for what I have done.”

Ticehurst’s mother said it appears there was a failure to protect her daughter from harm after her first police report, calling on the NSW Premier to release details of an investigation into service providers.

Supporting the family was Donna Thornell, a campaigner against domestic violence whose daughter Kristy was murdered in 2023.

“It was horrible. It was like deja vu for us,” she said.

“There just needs to be accountability. You know, no more bail. AVOs, they obviously don’t work.”

The judge will hand down her sentence next Friday.

“It’s going to be a long week,” Ticehurst’s father Tony said.

“I’d really like to thank the people of Forbes, New South Wales, Australia, that have been supportive to us.”
