Police photographs released late today have revealed the injuries suffered by AFL great Mick Malthouse during an alleged home invasion in his East Melbourne property.

Malthouse, 72, was allegedly set upon after confronting three men trying to force their way into his apartment in September last year.

He was allegedly struck on the arm with an iron bar and stabbed in the sternum with a screwdriver.

The former Collingwood and West Coast premiership coach appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court this week to give evidence in a hearing for three men who allegedly tried to break into his home.

He said he managed to disarm one of the attackers and strike him with an exercise bar, before all three fled.

Andrew Carroll, 50, Aysar Mashu, 38, and Joshua Di Cello, 36, stand accused of the terrifying invasion.

Malthouse played 174 VFL games for St Kilda and Richmond, including the latter’s 1980 premiership, before embarking on a record-breaking 718-game coaching career at Western Bulldogs, West Coast, Collingwood and Carlton, masterminding three premierships (1992, 1994, 2010).
