From the breathtakingly gorgeous Ghibli and Bora to the mind-blowingly quick MC20 supercar and Grecale Trofeo, Maserati has spent generations combining extraordinary Italian design with performance that makes every journey feel like an occasion.

There's something wonderfully irrational about a Maserati. And I mean that in the best possible way. The brand name alone congers up pure Italian exotica, and it’s always been that way for as long as I can remember.

You don't buy one simply because it accelerates to 100km/h in a particular number of seconds, has a beautifully finished interior, or carries a prestigious badge.

I suppose for many it’s all of that and much more. But for me, you buy one because it makes you feel something.

Because when you walk towards it in the morning, there's that little moment of anticipation. Because when you press the starter, you expect more than the mechanical bark of a powerful engine coming to life, though I have to admit there are very few cars that sound as good as a Maserati – in any guise.

And because, deep down, you appreciate that some cars are designed to do considerably more than transport you from one place to another. That's always been the magic of Maserati.

For more than a century, this extraordinary Italian manufacturer has occupied a fascinating position in the automotive world, combining serious racing credentials with some of the most spectacular road cars ever created.

And unlike manufacturers that have built their reputations around engineering efficiency or sheer production volume, Maserati has always understood the importance of individuality.

It's a philosophy that began on the racetrack, flourished through decades of extraordinary Italian automotive design, and continues today in vehicles like the Grecale Trofeo.

A luxury performance SUV armed with a proper supercar engine. And, it’s a Maserati.

A different kind of automotive greatness

To understand what makes Maserati special, you need to appreciate the extraordinary automotive culture from which it emerged.

Italy has given the world some of its most beautiful objects.

Architecture, furniture, fashion, sculpture and industrial design have all benefited from that remarkable Italian ability to combine form and function with a generous helping of emotion.

And nowhere is that more apparent than in the country's automotive industry.

Maserati was founded in Bologna in 1914, initially as an engineering business driven by the ambitions of the Maserati brothers. By 1926, the company had created its first racing car to carry the Trident emblem, the Tipo 26.

It made its competition debut at the Targa Florio in Sicily, winning its class with Alfieri Maserati at the wheel. That single event established the foundations of a racing dynasty.

Over the following decades, Maserati would conquer some of the world's greatest motorsport events, including consecutive Indianapolis 500 victories in 1939 and 1940.

Then came the legendary Maserati 250F, the magnificently styled front-engined Formula 1 car that helped Juan Manuel Fangio secure the 1957 World Drivers' Championship.

These weren't merely promotional exercises. Racing was fundamental to Maserati's identity.

And importantly, the knowledge, engineering ambition and competitive spirit developed on the circuit would eventually influence an extraordinary succession of incredibly beautiful road cars.

When cars became rolling works of art

The 1950s and 1960s were a golden era for Italian automotive design. And Maserati was right at the centre of it.

Consider the magnificent 3500 GT, introduced in 1957. Here was a car that combined the mechanical credibility of a racing manufacturer with the sophistication of a proper Italian grand tourer.

Its elegant proportions, long bonnet and beautifully restrained detailing established a design language that would influence Maserati for generations.

But the company wasn't interested in standing still. In 1963, it introduced the Quattroporte, effectively helping establish the concept of a genuinely high-performance luxury saloon. A car capable of carrying four adults in considerable comfort while delivering performance worthy of the Maserati name.

It was a wonderfully audacious idea.

And then came the Ghibli. Unveiled in 1966, the original Ghibli remains one of the most beautiful front-engined grand tourers ever produced.

Designed by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro while working at Ghia, its dramatic low-slung profile, long bonnet and beautifully integrated fastback rear-end were simply breathtaking.

Even today, nearly six decades later, it looks sensational. And that's the wonderful thing about truly great automotive design. It doesn't need to shout.

It doesn't need oversized wings or extravagant detailing. It simply needs the right proportions, a confident design philosophy and the courage to be different. Maserati understood that instinctively.

The mid-engined Bora, introduced in 1971, was another masterpiece. Again styled by Giugiaro, it combined a sophisticated mid-engine layout with a dramatic wedge-shaped body that looked every inch the exotic Italian supercar.

Then came the Khamsin (one of my all-time favourites), designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, with its angular proportions and unmistakably futuristic appearance.

Each of these cars represented a different interpretation of performance and beauty. Yet all were instantly recognisable as something special.

And all demonstrated Maserati's willingness to pursue individuality rather than follow convention.

The sound of something special

Of course, Maserati's appeal has never been purely visual. Engines have always played a central role in the brand's identity.

From the magnificent straight-six of the 250F to the muscular V8 engines fitted to generations of Maserati grand tourers, the company has produced some genuinely memorable powerplants.

And the soundtrack has always mattered. A great performance engine isn't simply a device for generating horsepower. It's an instrument.

The induction noise, the mechanical character, the exhaust note, and the way an engine responds to the accelerator are all part of the experience. It's something Maserati understands better than most.

And perhaps no modern vehicle demonstrates that engineering ambition more clearly than the MC20 supercar.

Introduced in 2020, the MC20 represented a dramatic return to Maserati's supercar roots. Its stunning mid-engine design, lightweight carbon-fibre construction and extraordinary Nettuno V6 engine created one of the most significant Maseratis of the modern era.

The engine was particularly impressive. Developed by Maserati, the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged Nettuno introduced an advanced pre-chamber combustion system using technology inspired by Formula 1.

The result was a compact, sophisticated and remarkably powerful engine capable of delivering 463kW of power in the MC20.

But the really interesting part of this story is what happened next. Because Maserati recognised that the Nettuno's extraordinary engineering could form the basis of something rather different.

Something with five seats, a spacious cabin and the versatility of an SUV. Enter the Grecale Trofeo.

The SUV with genuine supercar DNA

There's no shortage of seriously fast luxury SUVs today. In fact, outright performance has become almost commonplace at the upper end of the market.

But that doesn't necessarily mean every performance SUV delivers the same emotional experience. And this is where the Grecale Trofeo becomes particularly interesting.

Rather than simply installing a more powerful version of a conventional engine, Maserati has equipped its flagship performance SUV with a version of the Nettuno V6 developed from the same advanced engine family as the MC20 supercar.

SuppliedSupplied Credit: CarExpert

It's an important distinction. The Grecale Trofeo’s engine isn't literally transplanted unchanged from the MC20. It has been extensively adapted for SUV duties, including a different lubrication system and cylinder-deactivation technology.

But the fundamental engineering connection is genuine. The Trofeo's 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 develops 390kW of power and 620Nm of torque.

Combined with intelligent all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, it delivers a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 3.8 seconds.

That's extraordinary performance for a vehicle offering the space, practicality and comfort of a luxury SUV.

SuppliedSupplied Credit: CarExpert

But what makes the Trofeo compelling isn't simply the acceleration. It's the character behind it.

There's something deeply satisfying about a responsive combustion engine, particularly one with this level of engineering sophistication.

The immediacy of the throttle, the surge of torque, the character of the V6 and the interaction between engine, transmission and chassis are all integral to the driving experience.

And that's where the Maserati philosophy comes alive. Performance should engage the senses, not simply register an impressive number on a screen.

More than just straight-line speed

The Grecale Trofeo's engineering goes considerably further than its engine. Its sophisticated chassis has been developed to deliver the sort of dynamic involvement you'd expect from a vehicle wearing the Trident.

Adaptive air suspension provides the ability to balance everyday ride comfort with more focused handling when the road becomes interesting.

An electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential helps manage the substantial performance available, while intelligent all-wheel drive delivers traction and confidence across a variety of conditions.

SuppliedSupplied Credit: CarExpert

The result is a luxury SUV designed to feel agile, responsive and engaging without sacrificing the refinement expected of a premium Italian grand tourer.

And that balance is essential. Because a genuinely great performance car should be enjoyable on more than just a perfectly surfaced mountain road.

It should feel special during an early morning drive, comfortable on a long interstate journey, and sufficiently refined for everyday use. The Grecale Trofeo aims to deliver all three.

Italian luxury with genuine individuality

Naturally, the Italian design influence extends well beyond the mechanical package.

Created by Centro Stile Maserati and manufactured in Italy, the Grecale Trofeo combines muscular proportions with the elegance and restraint that have characterised some of Maserati's greatest road cars.

The sculpted bonnet, distinctive front grille, athletic stance and beautifully resolved rear-end design give it genuine road presence. It's recognisably a Maserati without relying on excessive styling theatrics.

SuppliedSupplied Credit: CarExpert

Inside, there's a similar emphasis on design, materials and attention to detail. Premium leather, sophisticated digital displays and carefully considered finishes create a cabin that feels contemporary without abandoning the sense of craftsmanship traditionally associated with the marque.

And that's significant. Because the luxury performance SUV market has become increasingly competitive, with manufacturers offering extraordinary levels of technology, equipment and performance.

But true individuality remains harder to find. The Grecale Trofeo offers something beyond the conventional prestige formula.

SuppliedSupplied Credit: CarExpert

It's a vehicle for people who appreciate design as much as engineering, who value craftsmanship alongside performance, and who want their choice of car to reflect their own personality.

There's also a certain appeal in owning something that isn't quite so commonplace. Not because exclusivity is necessarily about attracting attention, but because driving something distinctive can be a pleasure in itself.

A century of passion, brought into the present

In 2026, Maserati celebrates 100 years of the Trident emblem and its first racing victory. It's a remarkable milestone.

From the Tipo 26 and Fangio's 250F to the breathtaking Ghibli, Bora, MC12 and MC20, Maserati's history reads like a greatest-hits collection of automotive engineering and Italian design.

Yet the most important thing about that heritage is that it remains relevant. The Grecale Trofeo demonstrates how a century of performance thinking can be expressed in a thoroughly modern luxury SUV.

It combines supercar-derived engine technology, sophisticated chassis engineering, distinctive Italian craftsmanship, and the everyday versatility demanded by contemporary buyers.

SuppliedSupplied Credit: CarExpert

And, crucially, it does so without losing the character that makes a Maserati special.

With a limited number of MY26 Grecale Trofeo vehicles available now, there's a timely opportunity to discover that character first-hand. Because while the automotive world continues to evolve, some things remain wonderfully constant.

Great design never seems to go out of fashion. A truly special engine can still stir the soul. And after a century of racing, innovation and extraordinary Italian cars, Maserati still understands something fundamental about driving.

The best cars don't simply take you somewhere. They make you feel something along the way.
