A man has been charged after allegedly displaying an antisemitic tattoo on a beach north of Sydney.

Members of the public called police to Bar Beach in Newcastle on Christmas Eve after a man was spotted with a nazi symbol allegedly tattooed on his leg.

After an investigation into the incident, a 36-year-old man was arrested at a home in Urunga, south of Coffs Harbour about 6.30pm on Saturday.

He was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station and charged with knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol in public.

The man was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday January 22, 2026.

A man who was at the beach at the time of the incident told ABC News that he found the tattoo “intimidating”.

“It would be disgusting at any time, but a week and a half after a terrorist attack against Jewish people. Absolutely disgusting, I thought,” he told the publication.

The tattoo was believed to be an SS Schutzstaffel symbol, and was worn by members of the Nazi regime’s elite guard.

Laws introduced in Australia in 2022 banned the display of Nazi Symbols in public.
