A man has been charged after allegedly groping women in broad daylight in Melbourne’s CBD and injuring a police officer during a violent arrest.

Police were called to the Flinders Street steps about 5.30pm on Monday following multiple reports of a man randomly approaching and assaulting members of the public — some in a sexual manner.

Several women were allegedly groped and threatened, police said.

Officers located and arrested a 36-year-old man on Bourke Street a short time later.

During the arrest, the man allegedly spat at officers and assaulted them.

A senior constable was injured and taken to hospital.

The man has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of indictable assault on police.

He was bailed to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 21.
